20 Things I Know To Be True
Oftentimes, when people struggle with depression or anxiety they mix up feelings with facts. Have you ever mashed them together such that your emotions dictated what was true and what was false for you? If this feels like you, know that you are not alone. When your emotions run high and your nervous system is in overdrive, it’s very common to confuse feelings with facts.
So, what is a fact? A fact can be defined as something that is an indisputable truth in most situations or circumstances. For example, 2 + 2 = 4, or 25 degrees F is colder than 85 degrees F, are facts. Their reality cannot be driven or altered by feelings. In comparison, I am a failure, or no one accepts me are perceptions driven by feelings.
Sometimes, when your mind is overcrowded with too many emotions, whether self doubt, loneliness, or fear, it is easy to get tangled in the what ifs and to confuse your feelings with absolute, indisputable reality (or fact). During these times, it is so important to take the time to fact check. Write your list of facts down as a tool for future bad days, or weeks. They are an invaluable resource for you to tap into, and build on, again and again. This list can help you stay strong, identify powerful emotions, and distinguish them from facts. Here are just a few things I know to be true.
