I have been speaking with many families and teachers through telehealth, helping them to keep children motivated and focused without the structure of the classroom. These tips can help keep children engaged with their school work, foster self-regulation, and promote creativity during COVID-19. Here are a few additional suggestions. First, “catch” your children doing something good, whether being a loving big sister or brother, staying focused on that math sheet, or using lovely shades of blue and green in a drawing. Focus on “what went right today” and share it with your children. Second, many children absolutely need physical contact all the way through adolescence, no matter what they say! Be generous with those hugs or gentle rubs on the back.
