New Years Intentions
The New Year is a time not only to reflect on everything you have accomplished over the past 12 months, but also to put forth new intentions for the upcoming year.
Many people make resolutions for the New Year but often times it is difficult to follow through with them. There are many factors that contribute to the challenges people face when working towards this type of goal. Here are a few tips to successfully setting and achieving your resolutions for the New Year:
- Set a goal that is realistic and attainable for you. Setting goals that are unattainable often lead to feelings of disappointment. The more specific and concrete you make your goals, the easier it will be for you to achieve them.
- Make sure the goals you set are for yourself. When you choose something that you really want to accomplish, as opposed to a goal being imposed by another person, you are more likely to achieve it.
- Choose only one resolution. When setting goals, focus on one task at a time. Taking on too much at once could lead to you feeling overwhelmed and unmotivated.
- Write down your resolution. When you write down your goals, you are able to keep track of your progress. It will also aids in reminding you of what you are working towards. Another way to remind yourself of the goal you are working on is to hang up your written goal in a visible place.
- Make a plan. Set a goal that can easily be worked into your daily routine. Make a timeline that will allow you to project when and how you will achieve your goal.
- Take small steps to achieving your goal. Trying to tackle a long-term goal quickly can seem like a pretty daunting task. Breaking that large goal down into smaller, more attainable goals will ensure that you will maintain momentum. It will also lessen the likelihood of feeling overwhelmed.
- Assess your goals. If you have noticed that you have had the same resolution for the past five years with no success, clearly something isn’t working well for you. It is time to take a step back, reassess your goals, and possibly create new focus.
- Most importantly, find what motivates you. A lack of motivation can be a major contributing factor to why people don’t move forward with their goals. Find ways to inspire yourself and remind yourself of why you want to achieve your goal.
Setting goals for yourself shouldn’t be something that only happens once a year. Make an effort to do this year round. If you find that you are having trouble setting goals for yourself or if you feel a general lack of motivation, we are here to help.
